Call 911, if you are worried that you or someone else is in immediate danger.

Young people see, hear, and know things that adults do not.

Acts of hate and hate-based violence are rarely random.

Often, the people who commit violence show warning signs or even share their plans with someone. This means that hate and violence are preventable! If enough people know how to respond and get help, we can UP End Hate together. It might seem hard or scary at first, but there are simple steps you can take to stop hate, prevent violence, and make your community safer.

The PREMO system

When youโ€™re faced with a situation involving hate or hate-based violence, use the acronym PREMO. This system will help you choose an action that makes sense for the situation and keeps you safe.

The PREMO system is a product of the Community Matters evidence-based Safe School Ambassadors Program curriculum.

PREMO
What's the problem? What's truly going on?

To figure out the best solution, start by defining the problem.

Your actions should match the situation.

PREMO
What is my relationship to the people involved?

Your actions will also depend on how well you know the people involved.

Are they friends or strangers?

PREMO
What's the environment like? Who's around?

It's okay to choose where to have a conversation.

Private conversations or a direct messages may provide more comfort or yield better results than public conversations.

PREMO
What's my mood or "internal weather"?

Being a successful upstander starts with taking care of yourself first.

If you donโ€™t feel like youโ€™re calm enough to act, itโ€™s ok to wait!

PREMO
