"In a society that is becoming increasingly polarized and divided at the expense of our peers, it has become paramount to our livelihood to become involved in dispelling hate in all forms on every platform. The rise of the internet, like with all man-made technological advances, has been a transformative double-edged sword, and as we look at the problems humankind is facing, we will need to focus on what unites us instead of what divides us. With all of this in mind, I am passionate about doing my part to create a more just and humane society by any means possible."

โ€œI am involved with this important campaign becasue I want to make a change. MLK once said, โ€˜Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.โ€

โ€œI have a firm belief in implementing preventive measures to address hate, an issue which is stopping so much potential for humanity to flourish. Creating an environment of support and empathy to advocate and work towards respect for those around us is a cause I will always root for.โ€

โ€œIn order for one to stop hate-based violence you must meet it with love. The object is not to hate the hate but to teach those how to love. If one can not learn to love they will only know how to hate.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m passionate about ending hate-based violence because it threatens the fundamental rights and dignity of individuals. By fostering unity and promoting tolerance, we can build safer and more compassionate communities for everyone.โ€

About Eradicate Hate Global Summit

Eradicate Hate developed the most comprehensive anti-hate program in the world in response to the 2018 attack on three congregations worshiping at the Tree of Life Synagogue.ย  The organizers refused to merely be defined as victims of hate. Instead, they resolved to use the attack as motivation to drive the development and deployment of effective approaches to reduce all forms of hate-fueled violence.

Eradicate Hate started with a Global Summit in 2021, and participants formed working groups to create concrete deliverables to share at the next annual Summit.ย  The Fall 2023 Summit welcomed 1,110 in-person attendees, 347 virtual attendees, and 350 speakers in plenary and working group sessions.

Eradicate Hate formed a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation in January 2023, and welcomed Brette Steele as its new President in March 2024.ย  Steele, a renowned expert in the prevention of targeted violence, brought her talented team and federal grant-funded initiatives to Eradicate Hate.ย  These initiatives include Invent2Prevent (an experiential learning program for high school/college students), Prevention Practitioners Network (an interdisciplinary network), and SCREEN Hate (a national campaign).

The Board of Directors draws from local leaders, and the Board Co-Chairs are Mark Nordenberg and Laura Ellsworth.

The Community Matters Safe School Ambassadors Programยฎย  is a vital partner of this project.

The Safe School Ambassadorsยฎ Program (SSA) is an evidence-based program that harnesses the power of students to prevent and stop bullying and mistreatment. It is considered a social-emotional learning program (SEL) and has been approved by many school districts as meeting their required SEL criteria.

The SSA Program is a student-centered model that educates diverse social leaders with the skills to prevent and reduce bullying. It is the nationโ€™s most effective student-led bullying prevention program.

The Safe School Ambassadorsยฎ Program relies on the โ€œinside-outโ€ approach to improving school climate. Student bystanders see, hear, and know things adults donโ€™t, can intervene in ways adults canโ€™t, and are often on the scene of an incident before an adult. They are a critical and necessary resource for positively impacting the crisis of bullying in our schools.

The Safe School Ambassadorsยฎ Program harnesses the power of the socially influential leaders of a schoolโ€™s diverse cliques; the ones who shape the social norms that govern other studentsโ€™ behavior. These leaders are carefully identified through student and staff surveys. They are selected based on specific criteria, such as strong position and influence in their peer group, good communication skills, and a history of standing up for friends.

The recruited students participate in a two-day interactive training along with several adults who serve as program mentors. The training gives student Ambassadors the skills and tools to resolve conflicts, defuse incidents, and support isolated and excluded students. After the training, small group meetings of Ambassadors are held every few weeks. These meetings, led by the adult mentors, provide time for strengthening skills, support data collection and analysis of Ambassador interventions, and help sustain student and adult commitment to the program.

80% of trained Ambassadors report a gain in confidence and competence in their ability to intervene and speak up when they witness bullying, harassment, and cyber-bullying in their school.
